‘Harry Potter’ Books vs Movies – 20 Major Differences
It’s a dangerous job with a high risk of being obliviated, but some stories managed to leak from the Ministry of Magic into the light of day.
Avoiding the Ministry’s aurors, here are 26 magical Harry Potterfacts that even Muggles should know…
1. There’s a Platform 7½ at King’s Cross
J.K Rowling has entertained the idea that Platform 9¾, the train used to travel from London to Hogwarts, is not the only one hidden at King’s Cross station. Little did you know that there’s a train that visits all the Wizard-only villages in Europe at Platform 7½!
We wonder which platform takes you to the Quidditch World Cup…
2. Creating Voldemort’s Nose Was ‘Laborious’
It’s easier to assume that makeup or a prosthetic was used to achieve Voldemort’s eerie nose, but in fact, a lot more work went into that. According to visual effects supervisor Paul Franklin, extensive face-recognition software was used to fabricate the villain’s flat nose.
“There’s this idea that we put the shots through the computer and it just vanished off [Fiennes’] face. [His nose] had to be painstakinglyedited out, frame by frame, over the whole film. And then the snake slits had to be added and tracked very carefully using dots put on his face for reference.”
He added: “It’s very laborious, very time consuming and the level of detail you have to hit is exquisite. It’s like creating a renaissance painting – the digital brushwork has to be very, very fine to get it to work. The art and time that goes into those nostrils should never be underestimated.”
You can spot the dots in this awesome behind the scenes photo of Voldemort:
3. Rowling’s Depression Inspired the Dementors
What makes the Dementors so convincingly scary? Rowling apparently based the foul creatures on her own experiences of depression following the death of her mother.“It’s so difficult to describe [depression] to someone who’s never been there, because it’s not sadness. I know sadness. Sadness is to cry and to feel. But it’s that cold absence of feeling—that really hollowed-out feeling. That’s what Dementors are”,“Rowling told Oprah Winfrey.
4. Eddie Redmayne Auditioned to be Tom Riddle
That’s right! Fantastic Beastsactor, Eddie Redmayne originally auditioned to play a young Tom RiddleinChamber of Secrets, but was turned down after reading just one line. Thankfully, he was lucky enough to play the role of lead character,Newt Scamander in the spin-off movie. Oh, and he won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2015.
5. Harry and Rowling Share a Birthday
More of a hidden Harry Potter Easter Egg, but also a very interesting fact! Harry Potter and writer, J.K Rowling have the same birthday – July 31st! That’s not all. The renowned author has revealed that Hermione is a bit like her when she was younger. In fact, her favorite animal is an otter, which, as you know, is Hermione’s patronus.
6. The Spells are Latin-Based
“Latin is a dead language, dead as can be. It killed the Romans and now it’s killing me.” If you’re a wizard, this schoolboy rhyme might ring true. Many deadly Harry Potter spells such as “Imperius”, “Crucio” and friendlier ones like “Obliviate” and Harry’s favorite, “Expelliarmus”are based on Latin terms.
The language certainly isn’t dead among wizards.

7. Emma Watson Had to Pronounce her Name to Fans
We’re sure many of you have had people pronounce your name wrong. This is true for poor Emma Watson as Rowling confessed that she’s received many letters asking how to pronounce her name. In fact, that whole moment in the Goblet of Fire where Hermione helps Viktor Krum pronounce it correctly, was for the fans.
8. Tom Riddle’s Darkest Fear is…
We all know that a boggart manifests itself as the thing you fear the most. What could it manifest for He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? Tom Riddle’s biggest fear is death, so hisboggart would most likely represent his own lifeless corpse, according to Rowling.
Talk about death anxiety.
9. Tom Felton Originally Auditioned to Play Harry
Here’s an interesting fact about an iconic Potter cast member! Although he landed the role of Draco Malfoy, Tom Felton was initially hoping to play either Harry or Ron. Felton and Radcliffe had no hard feelings towards each other, but one has to wonder if Felton might have channeled some jealously whenever Draco spat out the Potter name…
10. “Malfoy” Has an Accurate Definition
You might have thought “Draco” was an odd name for a child, but it’s not the worst compared to his family name. In Old French, “malfoi” means “bad trust” or “bad faith.” They say never judge a book by its cover, but what do you say about someone who has “dangerous to trust” in their own name?
It’s a very accurate definition, to say the least.
11. Hogwarts Motto Translates to…
Hogwarts’ motto, “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus,” translates to “never tickle a sleeping dragon.” A rather peculiar statement, but good advice nonetheless.
12. Rowling’s Ex-Boyfriend Inspired Quidditch
According to a 60 Minutes interview in 2003, Rowling came up with the idea of Quidditch after a row with her then-boyfriend. If a game involves random flying objects that only exist to hit you in the face, some violent feelings must have been involved to create it.
“Idon’t really know what the connection is between the row and Quidditch except that Quidditch is quite a violent game and maybe in my deepest, darkest soul I would quite like to see him hit by a bludger”, she said.

13. ‘The Sorcerer’sStone’ Almost Had Another Title
Think Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’sStone wasa disappointing alternative for the first book title? An early idea by Scholastic was to call it “Harry Potter and the School of Magic”, but the idea was dropped by Rowling for not feeling right.
Thank goodness.
14. Rupert and Ron have a Lot in Common
When director, Alfonso Cuarón told his three stars Rupert, Daniel and Emma to write an essay about their characters, they took it to heart, as Watson wrote 10 pages and Grint didn’t submit anything. He had exams at the time, but it worked “because that’s what Ron would have done.”
A+ Rupert!
15. The Malfoys Had Relations with the Royal Family
As much as they love to play up their pure-bloodedness, the Malfoy family were actually famous for rubbing elbows with the courts of Muggle England until the 18th century. “There is ample evidence to suggest that the first Lucius Malfoy was an unsuccessful aspirant to the hand of Elizabeth I, and some wizarding historians allege that the Queen’s subsequent opposition to marriage was due to a jinx placed upon her by the thwarted Malfoy,” Rowling revealed.
16. Steven King Praised Dolores Umbridge
She may be ranked as one of the worst characters in Harry Potter, but not in the eyes of a famous author. When he wrote a review for the Order of the Phoenix in his Entertainment Weekly column, Steven King praised Dolores Umbridge as “The gently smiling Dolores Umbridge, with her girlish voice, toadlike face, and clutching, stubby fingers, is the greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter.”
Does that make her scarier than Lord Voldemort? We vote no.
17. Alan Rickman Knew Snape’s Motivations
Alan Rickman once said that he loved to play “very interesting people.” What could be more interesting than having to teach the legendary son of your former crush and school bully? Thanks to Rowling, Alan was aware from quite early on that Snape loved Lilly Potter and it was likely key in selling his resentment over the Boy Who Lived.
“I told him really early on that Snape had been in love with Lily, that’s why he hated James, that’s why he projected this amount of dislike onto Harry,” she said.
18. He Also Knew About the Sirius Twist
Turns out, Alan Rickman was J.K. Rowling’s confidant throughout the filming of the Potter movies. During Harry Potter20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, Daniel Radcliffe revealed to Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) that Rickman knew all about the Sirius plot twist.

“He had the inside line,” Radcliffe said. “He very, very early said to Jo (J.K. Rowling), he was like, ‘I think I need to know what happens.’ And he never told Chris [Columbus], never told anyone. Chris would literally say to him, ‘Why are you doing that like that?’ He’d say, ‘I’ll tell you later.’”
19. Mathew Lewis had to Wear a Fat Suit
Hit with the beauty stick some time in his teens, Mathew Lewis had to wear a fat suit whilst filming The Prisoner of Azkaban through to The Half-Blood Prince. He also admitted to wearing false teeth for the third and fourth movies in order to nail the portrayal of Neville Longbottom. Cruelly apt for unlucky Neville, this is very embarrassing when you’re 15 and suddenly interested in girls.
20. Fred and George Were Born on April Fools
The stars must have aligned when twins, Fred and George were born. They were literallybornto be jokers! The wizard kings of practical jokes have their shared birthday on April 1st – AKA, April Fools’ Day – the official day of practical jokes and spreading hoaxes!
Cakes and boxing telescopes all round!
21. Arthur and Ron Weasley were Almost Killed off
Death has played a key part in the tale of Harry’s life from beginning to end, but not everything is set in stone. Good thing, too, as Rowling had several important figures lined up to die including Arthur Weasley. He luckily escaped the kiss of death because “there were very few good fathers in the book. In fact, you could make a very good case for Arthur Weasley being the only good father in the whole series.”
That’s not all. Rowling almost forced us to say goodbye to Ron, as well. She told Radcliffe that she had “seriously considered it“.
22. Hermione and Ron’s Kiss was “Horrifying”
It may have been one of our favorite moments throughout the Potter saga, but for these actors, it was the worst. During Return to Hogwarts, Emma Watson dubbed the romantic scene as “the most horrifying thing either of us has ever had to go through.”
“Kissing Rupert was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Watson said. “It just felt wrong, so wrong on any level because Dan, Rupert and I are so much siblings.” Grint joked that he had “blacked out” whilst filming the scene with Watson adding, “Every time you talk about this you make it sound like an actual horror show in your head.”
23. Herbology Plants are Real
Mandrake, wormwood, wolfsbane, knotgrass, belladonna and more! Surprisingly, a lot of herbology plants are real, some of which can be found in your local garden centre. As a matter of fact,Rowling didn’t completely invent the idea of the mandrake baby. The whole thing about mandrake roots having a lethal scream when you pull them out of the ground is genuine Medieval folklore.
Some plants includingflax weed, toadflax, fleawort, Gout-wort, grommel, knotgrass and Mugwort were names collected by Rowling out of a 17th century book by herbalist Nicholas Culpeper.
24. James Phelps Broke the Director’s Ribs
…by accident, of course! During the rehearsals of The Goblet of Fire, the actor who plays Fred Weasley accidentally broke the film’s director Mike Newell’s ribs. Whilst practicing the famous scene where the Weasley twins wrestle, Newell stepped in to demonstrate how the scene should look.
“I was a tubby, 60-year-old gent at that stage. I really shouldn’t have done it,” Newell said. “I remember gripping him around the waist and trying to fling him about and so forth and cracked a couple of ribs. So I was in absolute agony from then on.”
25. Emma Watson Almost Quit the Saga
Emma Watson revealed during the 20 year anniversary reunion that she almost quit playing the role of Hermionejust before filming Order of the Phoenix. Recalling a diary entry from the time, Watson admitted, “I could see that, at times, I was lonely.”
When asked by Rupert Grint if she ever considered “pulling out”, she explained, “I think I was scared. I don’t know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point when you were like, ‘This is kind of forever now.’”
Harry Potterwithout Hermione Granger? Now, that’s a travesty!
26. ‘Dramione’ *May* Have Been a Thing
Although “nothing romantic” ever came of it, we still have hopes that one day it will. Emma Watson admitted during Return to Hogwarts that she had a crush on Tom Felton. “I just fell in love with him…If his number was on the call sheet it was an extra exciting day,” she said.
Nevertheless, Felton only saw Emma as a “sister”, but mentioned that the pair have “always loved each other really.” “I’ve always had a soft spot for her and it continues to this day,” he said. “There’s always been something like a kinship.”
